Apart from the massive savings in development costs, such a strategy also applies that little extra leverage to get people/organisations to update their browser. 

The main reason for those extra development hours/days for IE6 support is that stake holders are afraid to loose customers to competitors. I think we have now reached a turning point where it is better to spend less time on IE6 and more time exploiting newer browsers capabilities.</description>
